An enclosure is more than a cabinet. It protects what keeps your business running – even in harsh environments. That’s why it’s important to choose the right corrosivity class from the start. Here’s a clear guide to what the classes mean and how to ensure the longevity of your enclosure.

Why are corrosivity classes important?

Different environments place different demands on materials and surface treatment. Moisture, salt, dust or chemicals can eventually damage both the enclosure and its contents. Choosing the right class protects not only the enclosure, but also the operation – and reduces the risk of downtime and costly repairs.

Indoors

C1: xxx

C2: Atmosphere with low pollution level. Mainly rural environment

C3: Urban and industrial environment, moderate sulphur dioxide pollution. Coastal areas with low air salinity

C4: Industry and coastal districts with moderate air salinity (coastal > 3 km from coast)

C5-M: Coastal and offshore environments with high air salinity (between 1 and 3 km from the coast)

C5-I: Industrial areas with high humidity and aggressive atmosphere

Overview of classes

Here is a summary:

  • C1 – Very low corrosivity
Dry, heated indoor environments where the risk of corrosion is minimal.

  • C2 – Low corrosivity
Indoor or outdoor environment with some condensation or short-term moisture.

  • C3 – Moderate corrosivity
Industrial environments with some humidity and pollution.

  • C4 – High corrosivity
Coastal areas or chemical environments. Extra protection is required here.

  • C5 – Very high corrosivity
Aggressive environments with high humidity and salt. Example: marine installations or heavy industry.
